On the Road With the Boys

I again have the pleasure of reporting on the team while on the road with them. In what could be a potential Championship Preview the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs dropped the first of a three game series to the Somerset Patriots before a record crowd.

The Blue Crabs appeared to be feeling the loss of first baseman Eric Crozier and were unable to string their hits together in a timely fashion. None of the Blue Crabs 7 hits were hit in succession thus causing us to leave 7 batters stranded. We didn't get on the board until the 4th inning when Travis Garcia would lead off the inning with a home run. It was his tenth of the year and the only one hit in the game. We would get another run in the 9th after catcher Lance Burkhart got his first triple of the season with one out. He scored on first baseman Octavio Martinez's RBI ground out. But the run would come as too little too late as we were behind by 3 runs.

Travis After his Homerun!

Our pitching has also suffered some hard blows following the signing of both Jim Ed Warden and John Halama. Knuckle Baller Joe Gannon was back in action tonight starting the game and going 6.1 innings for the loss. He allowed only 6 hits with 5 runs, 4 of which were earned. He walked 3 batters and struck out one. Coming in to relieve Joe was newcomer and potential situational lefty Vinnie DeCristofaro who would face one batter and give up a hit before coming out of the game. His replacement was Byron Batson who pitched 2/3rds of an inning in relief. After his last appearance where he got the loss after giving up a grand slam he seemed in much better control tonight getting two outs and allowing one hit. Wayne Franklin who is predicted to be a starter pitched 2/3rds of an inning of relief, facing 3 batters, one of which he walked. Finally Jason Lavorgna would pitch the final out of the 8th.

In Other Blue Crabs News: Despite the loss we still remain in first place, 3.5 games ahead of Long Island, 9 games ahead of Camden, and 10 games ahead of Bridgeport. Reactivated tonight was bullpen catcher Anthony Perry. Eric Crozier played in his first game with the Bowie Baysox going 1 for 4 with a solo Homerun. Tomorrow night's game is also a 7:05 pm start.
